Lisa, it's sad that there are so many "Charity" org's out there that are actually making a ton of $$ off of well meaning American's. Please pass the word that folks need not blindly give money for fear the website with names of deployed troops will go away... Amazing how that is pushed to the members...if you don't give me money, I'll have to shut down the site. It really means, if you don't give me money, I can't afford to drive my new Harley and truck around...
Merry Christmas,
Semper Fi,

Reading some of your posts and I am taking all of this into consideration when deciding what organizations to support this year. As long as I have addresses of deployed service members as I do now and many other re-deploying I won't need to go through and organizations. From my hands to theirs via USPS.

Taco - once again thanks for the good information. There's one website where I get my names of contacts who are deployed to send my care packages to. I will not send money to the website after I read their 990. Too much money going into paying the key employees who yes indeed are all related.

Friends, This is all about how The Washington Post does business. Isn’t “Influence Peddling” a crime in the United States? A form of Racketeering? If so, what are its parameters? If not, shouldn’t it be? To paraphrase publisher Katherine Weymouth’s ridiculous mea culpa:“I’m ‘a Madame’, not a Madam. And this was to look like ‘a salon’, not a brothel. Many salons in DC offer massages and sometimes you can run into one of the WaPo journalists energizing their Blackberries at the appointed time. Paying for exclusive access to a Post journalist and discussing SalonCare Twitters my funny bone. If the journalist gets paid for leaking the topics of the events without being caught they'll likely receive a bonus from the Pugh Project (Smell of Money) for Excellence in Journalism. The only time WaPo mentions legitimate debate is when they get caught with the 'red light' on. Move on folks, there's nothing to see but a caution blinking yellow ...?

It is truly disappointing to read about alleged "non-profit" organizations. We should have all learned from the Red Cross and United Way.

My biggest disappointment is Soldiers Angels. They have "D" rating for a charity. I am not surprised, as they certainly squandered my donation. Never again.

Taco,
As usual you're on point. We've had problems with about 50% of the non-profits that we've encountered. (not all are military). I 100% agree that anyone supporting or donating to any non-profit should triple check to make sure the organization does what it says.

Thanks, Taco. I didn't know that about the 990.

I'm lucky that I get to use the Combined Federal Campaign, as the catalog of charitable orgs lists the percentage of the money that actually goes to the listed cause. It was sobering to see how inefficient some of the more well known orgs are.
